Curriculum

We find that long-term, sustainable growth in golf does not require hundreds of hours at the range.  Small blocks of time invested in a consistent schedule will produce better results.

Each student is different, and family calendars can get crazy, I know. Below is the goal investment of time, although it will vary based on the player’s level.

Weekly Athlete Schedule:

Below is a recommendation of lesson time, practice time and other commitments. It will differ based on student levels and tournament play. We will spend time discussing practice philosophy and best practices. Practice time is typically shorter than you’d expect and highly focused.

  • 1 lesson per week: 60min. Up to 90 minutes if you stay for range time with friends. Typically, after school around 4pm to 7pm start. Weekend lessons are available but will need to work around tournaments.
  • 1 driving range practice per week: 45min. Some students will do more than one driving range practice per week, but all I ask is for students to do one practice within a few days of their lesson to practice what they learned. This time is highly focused and should not be done with a friend. A second range session for fun can be done with friends.
  • 1 short game practice per week: 1 hour. Students should spend casual and relaxed time on their short game. Rushing this part of the game will always produce bad results. We will spend a lot of time learning to practice short game effectively. I do recommend partnering up with a friend to practice short game together, but please monitor their speed and mindset above each shot.
  • 2 to 3 golf workouts per week: I typically give students a conditioning drill or workout to do at home. High-level students will do more rigorous workouts about 30 minutes long, while junior-level students will be asked to do in-home movements without equipment for about 10 minutes.
  • Up to 1 tournament per week: Tournament time varies greatly based on the player ability, family schedule and student goals. We will spend a lot of time building readiness for tournament play. For a 9-hole tournament expect 4 hours of drive-time, warmup, play time, and awards. Expect 7 hours for an 18-hole event. Some tournaments play over two days and many play during the workday over summer. These can be challenging to schedule. In our academy we build friendships and support each other. Carpooling will be encouraged. Junior-level players will compete in approximately 10 events per year, all the way up to 30 events for the more advanced players.

Seasonal Schedule:

The weather in Cincinnati will impact the golf schedule quite a bit. In the winter, we do most of our lesson time indoors. Most practice bays have heating elements, so students are still expected to get their range time in. Short game lessons and practice time is drastically reduced. Weather will impact many outdoor sessions in Spring and Fall, at which point we convert them to indoor sessions, always trying to avoid canceling a session.

If students want to take a break from golf, December and January is the time to do it. In November, December and January, lessons are pay-as-you-go $40 per lesson. Our options are limited and there are usually a lot of schedule conflicts. Some students will use this time to make swing changes and double up on lessons per week.

Beginning in February, lesson time will focus on swing mechanics and preparation for tournament play at the end of March. For students who want a 9-month golf year, they can take off November to January.
